The Pathology Grossing Technician works independently using medical knowledge to perform human specimen examinations for diagnosis and patient treatment.
The laboratory receives and processes specimens from the Dermatology Offices and Clinics throughout the Southern CA region.
This Pathology Grossing Technician performs routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of surgical specimens for Histologic processing, according to policies and procedures.
Work is performed under general supervision referring matters to the supervisor only for a clarification of policy.
Independent decision-making occurs frequently in day-to-day operations.
Innovative procedures are occasionally necessary to accommodate the variety of samples prepared.
The incumbent interacts internally with staff pathologists and other technologists daily.
External contacts occur frequently with staff physicians and referring facilities.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities (including but not limited to the following): Ensure appropriate specimen identification and labeling.
Maintain the integrity of the specimen and patient identification.
Describe overall gross anatomic features of routine, uncomplicated surgical specimens including the specimen dimensions, structures, size, and appearance, and ensure that all lesions, markings, and sutures are mentioned.
Capable of grossing moderate to high complex/complicated specimens under direct and indirect supervision, as applicable to training and experience.
Demonstrated ability to handle a broad range of specimens with indirect supervision (i.
e.
, lipoma, oriented skin lesions, Mohs, etc.
).
Dissect surgical specimens (including core biopsies, shave biopsies, and excisions) and prepare tissues for histologic processing.
Client services responsibilities include answering client calls, processing add-on test requests, answering client questions or directing client inquiries, and clarifying patient demographics in the LIS system.
Disposal of hazardous chemical wastes per regulatory guidelines.
Monitor chemical and biohazard waste, and keep all waste manifests up to date.
Maintain strict confidentiality.
Receive and stock general lab supplies as needed.
Comply with all State, Federal, and professional regulations as well as company and departmental rules, policies, and procedural manuals.
Adherence to CLIA, State Regulations, HIPAA, Safety, and OSHA Regulations.
Must adhere to all department protocols and procedures.
Practice universal safety precautions according to laboratory policy and procedures at all times (e.
g.
use of gloves, lab coat, and other Personal Protective Equipment).
Maintain a clean and well-organized work area.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills & Abilities: The ability to type a minimum of 30 wpm with minimal errors is preferred.
General knowledge of Medical Terminology, Grammar, Spelling, and Punctuation.
Must be flexible with hours to meet workflow demands.
Must be detailed oriented, able to handle multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
Ability to work independently.
Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment, and maintain production and quality standards.
The incumbent must maintain competency and keep abreast of changing techniques and requirements in Anatomic Pathology dissection.

Effective interpersonal skills.
Qualifications & Experience Required: Bachelor's Science (BS) degree must include a minimum of 60 semester hours or equivalent, which includes either: 24 semester hours of Histology technology courses or 24 semester hours-6 chemistry, 6 biology and 12 chemistry, biology, Histology technology in any combination.
Or Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science, or Histology technology.
HT/HTL (ASCP) Certification preferred.
Must have a minimum of two (2) years of Histology and /or surgical gross experience.
Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time.
Ability to lift 25 pounds.
Wage Range - $21.
00/hr to $25.
00/hr DOE
