JOB MOORPARK UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT BUS DRIVER BASIC FUNCTION Under supervision, to operate a school bus over designated routes in transporting students safely and efficiently; and to perform related work as required.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Drives a bus daily or as assigned over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, picking up and/or discharging students; stops traffic as necessary to escort students safely across streets; transports students, faculty and parents on field trips to athletic events, meeting departure and arrival times as scheduled.
Maintains buses and other vehicles in a clean and safe condition, such as cleaning, sweeping and washing buses and minor seat repairs; maintains good order among students on the buses and while waiting at the bus stops; follows District policies regarding the disciplining of students and contact with parents and citizens; fuels vehicles; checks oil, fluid levels and safety equipment operation of vehicles.
Instructs students in various aspects of passenger and pedestrian safety; conducts bus evacuation training; if passengers are handicapped, provides special care and assistance as appropriate.
Maintains records of the operation of assigned vehicles as required by the state and District, completes daily reports on the operating condition and/or defects of assigned bus; conducts daily safety inspection of assigned bus as required by law; may pick up and/or make deliveries.
Attends training and driver’s skills improvement sessions as assigned; administers first aid to students; maintains current knowledge of federal, state, city and District regulations applicable to the position; may make deliveries and pick-ups.
OTHER DUTIES: Performs related duties similar to the above in scope and function as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS KNOWLEDGE OF: Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code, the Education Code, California Code of Regulations and current city and District regulations applicable to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of students.
School district routes and surrounding areas.
Principles of internal combustion engines.
Required record keeping.
First aid.
Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
ABILITY TO: Pass physical examination as prescribed by the state.
Demonstrate proficiency before operating an assigned vehicle.
Pass mandatory alcohol and/or drug tests.
Recognize mechanical defects.
May perform minor repair and maintenance work on District vehicles and buses Maintain accurate records.
Administer first aid.
Read a map.
Maintain safe discipline among students.
Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices.
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form.
Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities to perform the essential job functions is qualifying.
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: graduation from high school and sufficient training or experience to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed above; or Experience in the operation of a commercial vehicle with a safe driving record.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS Possession of a valid California Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a “P” – Passenger Endorsement and “S” School Bus Endorsement.
Possession of a valid California Special Driver Certificate (School Bus Driver).
Proof of automobile insurance.
Current Medical Examination Report (Dl-51) and/or Medical Examination Certificate (Dl-51A).
Valid First Aid Certification issued by an authorized agency or qualification by California Highway Patrol First Examination.
Incumbents are subject to mandatory alcohol and drug testing.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS Strength: Heavy work - lifting, carrying and/or pushing 100 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Incumbents have skin contact with detergents, abrasives and cleaning solvents;.
All routes require the working of split shifts and/or special assignment.
Some routes require physical assistance to the handicapped.
Incumbent maybe assigned to work irregular hours and/or five consecutive day work week to include Saturday and/or Sunday.
Incumbents are required to continuously sit, walk and/or stand.
Incumbents will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk and will frequently have repetitive hand, arm or finger motion.
Incumbents must have the faculty to see and read (with or without vision aides), laws and codes, rules and policies, technical manuals, sketches, and other printed matter.
Incumbent must have the faculty to hear and understand speech at normal room levels and other noise as it would relate to the field.
